Norfolk Iron and Metal

About NIM - History

Norfolk Iron and Metal began as Norfolk Hide and Metal Company in 1908. Company Founder John Robinson traveled extensively to find markets for the large tonnages of scrap metal processed in Norfolk. He soon earned a reputation for fair dealings, as well as the quality and quantity of his inventory.

While the early years included animal hides, coal, tires and other recyclables, the company position of distributing vast amounts of scrap metal became the burgeoning business.

John’s son Arnold, joined Norfolk Iron and Metal after World War II, and was largely responsible for moving Norfolk Iron and Metal into new phases of the metal market by eliminating nonmetal commodities. Some of our early success stories were supplying steel for dams along the Missouri River and for some of the first portable irrigation systems in the United States. John was also instrumental in bringing the NUCOR mini-mill bar mill to Norfolk.

Today, third generation president Dick Robinson has guided Norfolk Iron and Metal to become one of the most technologically advanced distribution centers in the nation. This has been accomplished through expanding facilities in Emporia Kansas, Greeley Colorado and Durant Iowa, and continuing the tradition of putting the customer first at every opportunity.

Norfolk Iron and Metal now operates and delivers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week allowing for next day delivery to many of our customers.

Norfolk Iron and Metal president Dick Robinson says, “Our commitment to customers, our unequaled selection, and our employees will prepare Norfolk Iron and Metal to meet the needs of our customers in the next and for many generations to come.”
