Do you like working with your hands? Do you like diagnosing mechanical problems and restoring machinery to its correct condition? If so, work as a maintenance technician may appeal to you. At Norfolk Iron & Metal, we have a new technician position available for the right candidate.
The Job: What Does a Maintenance Technician Do?
The work of maintenance technicians is vital for both commercial and industrial manufacturing facilities. At the heart of what they do, technicians maintain and repair the equipment and machinery at a facility. This can include everything from dismantling equipment to installing it when it is new. Technicians replace parts, clean and lubricate equipment parts, and troubleshoot machinery on the fritz.
The range of equipment serviced by maintenance technicians is very broad, ranging from small parts (gears, pulleys, bearings, motors, and shafts) to essential tools (saws and chainsaws, hand and powered tools, torch tables, racks, and welders) and heavy machinery (forklifts, cranes, and other gas and diesel equipment). It is the technician’s responsibility to ensure that these are kept in proper working condition.
Technicians form part of the maintenance staff, meaning they are responsible for repair and upkeep of the entire facility, building and grounds. They also assist with operations and building needs. The work performed must be done properly and carefully, following protocols, manuals, blueprints, and schematic drawings. This applies to both equipment and machinery in addition to the building and the grounds.
Because installation, fabrication, dismantling, and maintenance must be performed precisely to regulation, it is helpful for technicians to have experience with hydraulic systems and with performing minor electrical work. Experience with utilizing diagnostic testing equipment is also beneficial. Technicians use a maintenance management software system in order to look up parts, create work orders, and to perform and schedule preventative maintenance.
Safety is our top priority, and technicians must be responsible for their own behavior and the quality of their work. All safety regulations must be followed to the letter, this ensures that machinery, equipment, and the working environment are in safe and proper working order. All staff should also take it upon themselves to monitor the safety of their co-workers. Good safety practices cover a range of procedures:
- Perform work both carefully and mindfully
- Wear and use all protective gear according to regulations
- Report all incidents, accidents, and unsafe behaviors or conditions immediately to the supervisor
- Make available on-the-spot corrections of unsafe conditions or employee actions
- Set a good safety example
All employees will be held accountable for violations of safety policies and procedures.

What We’re Looking For
Above all else, we are looking for a new member of our team that is ready to be motivated and dedicated to quality work. The ideal candidate works well as a member of a group and is detail-oriented. Candidates with the initiative to work without external motivation have an edge. We prioritize integrity and loyalty and the devotion to carry out a given task well, attending to all of the necessary details. These personal qualities are most important for new hires as technical skills can be taught.
That being said, experience can expedite the training process and is valuable. A minimum of one year of industrial experience as a maintenance technician is required. We prefer formal education in the field, an associate degree or better in Electronics Technology, Mechanical Technology, or other related field. With such training, candidates are more likely to have a working understanding of hydraulic, electrical, and other related systems and tools.
Computer skills specific to industrial equipment as well as electrician experience are a plus. Candidates should also be physically capable of performing the work, with the required strength and dexterity to do the job well. We require our technicians to hold a driver’s license.
